Fixing Minecraft Local Server Discovery Problems: A Step-by-Step Guide

Apr. 6, 2023

Antivirus Software

Minecraft, the popular sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios, offers players the ability to host and join local servers for multiplayer gameplay. However, sometimes players encounter issues with discovering and connecting to local servers, causing frustration and hindering their multiplayer experience. In this step-by-step guide, we will explore common solutions to fix Minecraft local server discovery problems, allowing players to seamlessly connect with friends and enjoy multiplayer adventures.

Step 1: Check Network Connectivity

Ensure that all devices involved, including the host computer and the device attempting to join the server, are connected to the same local network. Verify that the devices have a stable internet connection and can communicate with each other.

Step 2: Whitelist Minecraft in Firewall and Antivirus Software

Firewalls and antivirus software can sometimes block Minecraft's network communication, preventing the discovery of local servers. Temporarily disable any firewalls or antivirus software, or add Minecraft to the exceptions or whitelist. Check both the host computer and the device attempting to connect to the server.

Step 3: Verify Server Status and Visibility

On the host computer, check if the server is running and accessible. Open Minecraft and navigate to the Multiplayer menu. Ensure that the server is visible and has the correct IP address and port number. If necessary, restart the server and double-check the server configuration settings.

Step 4: Manually Add Server IP Address

If the server is not automatically detected, manually add the server IP address and port on the device attempting to connect. Open Minecraft and go to the Multiplayer menu. Select "Add Server" or "Direct Connect" and enter the server's IP address (e.g., 192.168.0.1) and port number (default is 25565). Save the server and try connecting again.

Step 5: Check Router Settings

Some routers may have settings that prevent the discovery and connection of local servers. Access your router's settings through a web browser and look for options related to port forwarding, NAT (Network Address Translation), or UPnP (Universal Plug and Play). Enable UPnP or configure port forwarding to allow Minecraft's default port (25565) to pass through the router. Save the settings and restart the router if necessary.

Step 6: Use Direct IP Address and Port

If all else fails, use the direct IP address and port to connect to the local server. Ask the host computer's owner for the local IP address of the server (e.g., 192.168.0.1) and the port number. On the device attempting to connect, open Minecraft, go to the Multiplayer menu, select "Add Server" or "Direct Connect," and enter the IP address and port. Save the server and try connecting.

Step 7: Restart Devices and Clear DNS Cache

If the issue persists, restart both the host computer and the device attempting to connect. Restarting devices can clear temporary network issues and refresh network connections. Additionally, clear the DNS cache on both devices to ensure that any cached information that might interfere with server discovery is removed.

Step 8: Update Minecraft and Network Drivers

Ensure that both Minecraft and the network drivers on the host computer and the device attempting to connect are up to date. Outdated versions of Minecraft or network drivers can cause compatibility issues and impact server discovery. Update to the latest versions and try connecting again.
